Common Questions Homeowners Ask About Filming

Q: How long does filming take?

A standard day of filming typically runs 10–12 hours, which aligns with industry practices. However, shoot lengths can vary—some may only require a half-day, while others, like feature films, may span weeks.

For shoots longer than two days, we strongly encourage production companies to cover relocation costs for homeowners, as this ensures your comfort and convenience. Every shoot is unique, and we’ll always keep you informed of the expected timeline.

Q: Will the crew need to use water or electricity?

Q: Do I need special insurance for filming in my home?

No. The production company is required to have public liability insurance (usually $10M–$20M coverage) to protect against accidents or damages. You won’t be held financially responsible for anything related to the shoot. We’ll ask the production company to provide a certificate of insurance before filming begins, so you can rest easy knowing you’re covered.

Q: What happens if there is damage to my home?

Accidents happen, but your home is covered by both Sunshine Location’s Public Liability as well as the production company’s Public Liability. We take every precaution to prevent them. If something does get damaged:

  1. The production company’s insurance will cover the cost of repairs.

  2. Our team will document the damage and work with the production to resolve it quickly.

  3. You won’t be out of pocket or responsible for any costs.

We’ve never had a homeowner left with unexpected bills — your home’s safety is our priority.

Q: What contracts will I need to sign?

Before filming, you’ll sign a Location Agreement that outlines:

  • The dates and times of the shoot.

  • The rooms or areas being used.

  • Compensation details (if applicable).

  • Insurance and liability clauses (to protect you).

  • Confidentiality agreements (to keep your details private).

We’ll walk you through the agreement and answer any questions you have before you sign.

Q: Can the production company use footage of my home for other projects?

No. Any footage captured in your home is exclusively for the production’s current project. They cannot use it for marketing, other films, or unrelated purposes without your explicit written consent. If the production wants to use your home for future projects, they’ll need to ask you again and negotiate a new agreement.

Q: What if a neighbour complains about the shoot?

Prior to the shoot, we go around to neighbouring homes and deliver a Filming Notice that entails the details of the shoot - ensuring your neighbours are completely aware of the shoot. We handle all communications with neighbours and councils. If someone raises concerns:

  • We’ll address their questions or complaints professionally.

  • We’ll ensure the shoot complies with noise, parking, and other local regulations.

  • If necessary, we’ll adjust the schedule or location to accommodate their needs.

Your home is our priority, but we also work to maintain good relationships in the community.
